Notice to AQIS Officers, Importers and Brokers.

Changes to import permit conditions for cured pig meat products (Serrano Ham, Iberian Ham and Iberian Shoulder) from Spain.

AQIS Officers, Importers and Brokers are advised that the import permit conditions for cured pig meat products from Spain have been altered, effective from 1 April 2010. These alterations allow imported cured pig meat from Spain to travel in a sealed container along with other food products eligible for entry into Australia. Previously, Spanish cured pig meat was restricted to being transported in a sealed container separate to any other products. There is an additional requirement that the cured pig meat must be individually wrapped and in separate cartons to any other food products. The other food products must be for human consumption only and must not require any further treatment on arrival in Australia. The quarantine risk associated with cured pig meat from Spain is unchanged by these amendments.

Import Permit Conditions: PC2056, 2057 and 2058 for Serrano Ham, Iberian Ham and Iberian Shoulder have been altered as follows:

1. The current statement s) has been replaced with the statement ‘The cured pig meat product is individually wrapped and in cartons which contain only cured pig meat.’

2. Statement t) contains the revised statement ‘The cured pig meat product is being transported to Australia in a clean packing container sealed with a seal bearing the number or mark ….; the container contains only food products for human consumption which are eligible for entry into Australia.’

The Spanish Health Certificates (ASE – 624-625 and 626) which accompany consignments have been amended to reflect these statements.

Any future import permits will be issued with these new statements. Importers with existing import permits will still be able to use these to clear consignments which contain only cured pig meat. If Importers wish, they can apply for an amendment to have their current import permit updated to allow for mixed consignments. Please be advised that such a request will incur an administration charge of $150.00. Existing Import Permit holders will be individually advised of these alterations.

The ICON cases associated with each of these products remain unchanged.

Importers should also note that all foods imported into Australia must comply with the provisions of the Imported Food Control Act 1992 , an Act which is administered by AQIS. Notification of the import must be provided to AQIS for all imported goods other than goods imported as accompanied baggage or goods imported via the mail and not prescribed under the Customs Act 1901. Notification must be consistent with Quarantine Regulations 2000 (examples include a Quarantine Entry or a Quarantine declaration).
